UK-based chip designer ARM has told staff it must suspend business with Huawei, according to internal documents obtained by the BBC.

ARM instructed employees to halt “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei and its subsidiaries to comply with a recent US trade clampdown.

ARM’s designs form the basis of most mobile device processors worldwide.

In a company memo, it said its designs contained “US origin technology”.

As a consequence, it believes it is affected by the Trump administration’s ban.

One analyst described the move, if it became long-term, as an “insurmountable” blow to Huawei’s business.

He said it would greatly affect the firm’s ability to develop its own chips, many of which are currently built with ARM’s underlying technology, for which it pays a licence.

Cambridge-headquartered ARM had been described as the UK’s largest tech firm until its takeover by a Japanese fund. It employs 6,000 workers and lists eight offices in the US.

In a statement it said it was “complying with all of the latest regulations set forth by the US government”, but declined to comment further.

U.S Tech giant Google annouces it’s cutting ties with Huawei,whose Android mobile operating system powers most of the world’s smartphones, said Sunday it was beginning to cut ties with China’s Huawei, which Washington considers a national security threat.

Despite trade war with Beijing, President Donald Trump has barred U.S companies from engaging in telecommunications trade with foreign companies said to threaten American national security.

American companies can only engage in trade after obtaining the green light from the authorities.

The ban includes technology sharing.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” a Google spokesperson told AFP.

The move could have dramatic implications since Google, like all tech companies, must collaborate with smartphone makers to ensure its systems are compatible with their devices.

Google will have to halt business activities with Huawei that involve transfer of hardware, software and technical services that are not publicly available — meaning Huawei will only be able to use the open source version of Android, a source close to the matter told AFP.

Huawei will no longer have access to Google’s proprietary apps and services, such as the Gmail email service.

Huawei did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Google severs Huawei access to Android software
The move means new Huawei smartphones won’t be able to access many popular apps. The embattled Chinese company is under immense US pressure over its alleged government ties.

US tech giant Google said on Sunday it was pulling Huawei’s license to use its mobile phone operating system Android, forcing the Chinese company to rely on an open source version of the software.

New Huawei smartphones will no longer have access to services such as Gmail, maps and YouTube as well as security updates.

However, people already owning Huawei phones will be able to use and update apps already downloaded.

Last week, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop US companies from using telecommunications equipment made by “foreign adversaries” deemed to pose a national security risk. Trump blacklisted Huawei, denying it access to domestic markets and restricting US sales to the company.

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” a Google spokesperson said.

Huawei has come under immense US pressure following allegations it allows Chinese intelligence agencies to use alleged backdoors in the software. The allegations prompted the Chinese Foreign Ministry to denounce Western “hysteria” .

Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei has refused to bow to US pressure. Last week, Ren said his company had “already been preparing for this.”

“We have not done anything which violates the law,” Ren told Japanese business daily The Nikkei. “It is expected that Huawei’s growth may slow, but only slightly.”

Huawei is said to be a pioneer of 5G technology but relies heavily on foreign suppliers. The company buys about $67 billion (€60 billion) worth of components each year, including about $11 billion from US suppliers, according to The Nikkei.

Adverse impact

US media reports suggest Huawei had developed its own operating system in the event it lost access to Google and Microsoft services. Some of this technology is already being used in products sold in China, Huawei has said.

The President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, Mr Olusola Teniola revealed 30 millions Nigerians in some remote communities have never seen a mobile phone.

Mr Olusola Teniola while discussing some of major challenges and the potential of the telecoms industry.

When he was asked if he believe that there are some remote communities in Nigeria that are still without mobile networks. He said:

“That is correct. There are 102 market gaps that we have identified through research, which represents 20 to 30 million Nigerians, who have never made a voice call because they have never seen a mobile phone in their lives, let alone get onto the Internet. They are in darkness.”

According to report by United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria has 201 million in population.

Also, the government has set an ambitious goal to stop selling new gas and diesel passenger cars and vans by 2025.

A recent report shows that Electric vehicles now sell more than carbon-fuel based vehicles. This is was recorded for the first time in April in Norway. This accounts for 58.4% of all vehicle sales in the country.

According to reports, in March, 18,375 new cars were registered in the country and 10,732 of those were zero-emission vehicles, according to Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council, or OFV. That’s more double the number of zero-emission vehicles sold in March 2018.

Telsa’s Model 3 (TSLA) led the charge. The OFV says that 5,315 Model 3 sedans were registered in March, setting a record for sales of a single car model in a single month.

According to the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, the Norwegian government has instituted several incentives to ensure that people buy electric vehicles. For instance, electric cars owners are excluded from paying pay the 25% Value Added Tax (VAT) and are exempt from Norway’s carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and weight taxes imposed on gas and diesel vehicles. They also get discounts on parking, toll roads and ferries.

The Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association projects that electric vehicles will make up about 50% of the country’s car sales in 2019.

There were also 3,469 hybrid passenger cars sold last month — a 10% drop from March 2018.

The number of gas and diesel vehicle sales dropped to a record low.

Norway is a leader in the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

The Nigerian National Assembly, some weeks ago, rejected a bill to encourage the use of Electric Vehicle in the country.

1.Huawei P30 Pro 

The Huawei P30 takes the throne as the King of Smartphone Cameras at the moment with a DXOMARK scroe of 112 .

The P30 pro comes with a triple-camera setup (quad-camera, if you count the time-of-flight sensor) that offers a plethora of improvements over both the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro (launched in October 2018).

The primary camera comes with a 1/1.7 40Mp quad sensor that produces 10Mp image output. The 27mm-equivalent lens comes with an f/1.6 aperture and is optically stabilized—a first for this sensor size in a smartphone. Thanks to a minimum focus distance of 25mm, the 20Mp super-wide-angle (16mm-equivalent) camera is capable of capturing macro shots, but the arguably most exciting innovation is the stabilized tele-camera that uses folded optics to achieve a 5x optical zoom factor (125mm equivalent).

The laws of physics make it difficult to fit a longer zoom lens into a thin smartphone body. Even using smaller-than-usual image sensors and clever lens design, manufacturers have only managed so far to achieve 2 or 3x optical zoom factors in conventional high-end smartphones.

For the P30 Pro, Huawei uses folded optics to overcome this limitation. The image sensor is placed vertically within the phone and aimed at a lens with an optical axis that runs along the body of the phone, and a mirror is used to reflect incoming light into the lens and onto the sensor. This allows for a much longer equivalent focal length than would be possible with a camera oriented in the usual fashion—that is, one constrained by the phone’s thickness.

The P30 Pro doesn’t rely just on hardware alone for zooming, however. Software is just as important, and the P30 Pro uses a system Huawei calls field-of-view fusion, a combination of optical and algorithm-powered digital zooming that adapts to the chosen magnification factor. Up to 3x magnification, the tele-lens remains unused; instead, the camera performs all zooming with the help of a super-resolution algorithm—a concept similar to what we saw on the Google Pixel 3, one in which the camera merges several RAW frames into one high-resolution frame that it then crops for zooming.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments fell 4 percent annually to reach 330 million units in Q1 2019. Global smartphone shipments are showing signs of stabilizing and the outlook is improving for later this year. Samsung maintained first position with 22 per cent global smartphone market share in the first quarter of 2019, staying ahead of Huawei in second, followed by Apple in third place.

Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments dipped 4 percent annually from 345.4 million units in Q1 2018 to 330.4 million in Q1 2019. The global smartphone market has declined again on an annual basis, but the fall was less severe than before, and this was the industry’s best performance for three quarters. Global smartphone shipments are finally showing signs of stabilizing, due to relatively improved demand in major markets like China. The outlook for later this year is improving.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Samsung shipped 71.8 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2019, dipping 8 percent annually from 78.2 million units in Q1 2018. Samsung remains the world’s number one smartphone vendor, but it is coming under growing pressure from Huawei, who has a larger presence in the huge China market. Huawei surged 50 percent annually and outgrew all major rivals to ship 59.1 million smartphones worldwide during Q1 2019, up from 39.3 million in Q1 2018. Huawei captured a record 18 percent global smartphone market share in Q1 2019. Huawei is closing in on Samsung and streaking ahead of Apple, due to its strong presence across China, Western Europe and Africa.”

Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics, added,“Apple iPhone shipped 43.1 million units to capture 13 percent global smartphone market share in Q1 2019, dipping from 15 percent a year ago. Apple lost ground in China during the quarter and is struggling to make headway in price-sensitive India. However, decent price cuts in China and India during recent weeks indicate the iPhone will bounce back slightly in those two countries in the next quarter.”

Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, added,“Xiaomi returned to fourth place, capturing 8 percent global smartphone market share in Q1 2019, broadly at the same level from a year ago. Xiaomi is very strong in India, but it is struggling in China. OPPO held the fifth position with 8 percent global smartphone market share during the quarter, rising from 7 percent a year earlier. OPPO is now expanding hard into Western Europe, with new models like the Reno 5G, and this should help OPPO’s worldwide presence to improve in the coming months.”
