After the signings of Eder Militao from FC Porto, Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt, Eden Hazard from Chelsea and Ferland Mendy from Olympique Lyonnais, Real Madrid unveiled yet another player as they set to take Europe by storm.

Los Blancos unveiled yet another Brazilian youth international, Rodrygo Goes on Tuesday following the arrival – and subsequent first-team nailing performances – of Vinicius Junior last summer.

Madrid paid Santos, the home of Pelé and Neymar among other Brazil greats, 45 million euros for the 18-year-old, who will hope to have a similar impact on the club as his compatriot when he is handed his chance by Zinedine Zidane.

Rodrygo joined Santos at 11-years-old, making his debut at 16, with Real Madrid almost immediately being alerted to his talent by his agent Arcuri.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom has warned British nationals against travelling to about 21 states in Nigeria over security concerns.

The travel warning posted on its website and updated on Monday, stemmed from the worsening security situation occasioned by the Boko Haram terrorists attacks in the North East, armed banditry in the North-West and militancy in the South-South.

Specifically, the FCO advised against all travels to Borno; Yobe; Adamawa; Gombe; and the riverine areas of Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

The British government also cautioned against trips to within 20km of the border with Niger and Zamfara states.

The FCO further advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kogi and within 20km of the border with Niger in Sokoto and Kebbi states including the non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Abia States.

The advisory admonished British nationals to avoid crowds including political meetings, religious gatherings and places of worship, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, transport hubs and camps for displaced persons.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate and could affect western interests as well as places visited by tourists. Besides Abuja, other major towns and cities remain particularly at risk, including Kano and Kaduna,” it stated.

The FCO noted that there was a high threat of kidnap throughout the country, adding that abductions could be motivated by criminality or terrorism, and could be carried out for financial or political gain.

It stated, “The security environment in the northeast has deteriorated since 2018 and there is a heightened risk of kidnap.

“There is also a high threat of criminal kidnap in the Niger Delta region and Kogi State. If you travel to areas to which the FCO advise against travel, you are particularly at risk and will need a high level of security.”

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, of persecuting Muslim students in the institution.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“Adeleke University is a serial violator of Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslim students. This institution forces Muslim students to attend church on Sundays. It makes it mandatory for students living in the hostel to attend church every Wednesday and Saturday”, it read.

“The practice of any other faith on campus except Christianity is banned. Muslim students must not be seen observing Salat. Hijab is a taboo in Adeleke University. Yet all these Islamophobic practices are smartly hidden from prospective students of the institution until they have paid the exorbitant school fees and can no longer withdraw.”

MURIC called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to come to the rescue of Muslim students in Adeleke University.

“In particular, we invite NUC to take a look at the students’ handbook of this institution, especially pages 7, 49, 50, 56 and 60. These pages, to our mind, contain rules that infringe on the religious freedom of Muslim students. As a regulating body, NUC has a duty to intervene in this matter as part of its oversight function on Nigeria’s universities.

“Such intervention is necessary at this juncture to enhance quality control. We remind NUC that man is body, soul and spirit. These three organs must function without hinderance for students to perform maximally. As things stand today, Muslim students of Adeleke University have been deprived of the spiritual component of their humanity. We therefore call on NUC to investigate this issue as a matter of urgency. Religious repression is a potential threat to peace, law and order.

“MURIC is aware that such practices of religious intolerance exist in a few other private universities. We therefore advise Muslim parents and Muslim students to take necessary precaution. They should investigate very well before picking universities of interest.

“Many private universities do not bear Christian names but they pursue Christian evangelical goals. Worse still, they lack the spirit of tolerance. Muslim candidates who have already chosen private universities where they are likely to become victims of Islamophobia are, therefore, advised to apply for a change of university before it is too late.”

Aminu Achida (APC, Wurno) has emerged House of Assembly speaker in the PDP-led Sokoto State. Achida also defeated the anointed candidate of his party, Abdullahi Garba Sidi, representing Gwadabawa South Constituency.

Daily Trust learnt that the new speaker was backed by the ruling PDP in the state. The Sokoto Assembly has 16 APC members and 14 PDP members. Achida, who was nominated by Ibrahim Sarki (PDP, Sokoto North II), won by three votes having scored 16 of the 30 votes cast in the election that was conducted secretly under tight security.

Sidi secured 13 votes and one vote was declared invalid. For Deputy Speaker, Abubakar Magaji (PDP, Bodinga, North) who held the position during the 8th Assembly, was re-elected. Magaji, who was nominated by Malami Muhammad (PDP, Sokoto South II) secured 17 votes to defeat Alhaji Isa Harisu (APC, Kebbi) who had 12 votes. One vote was declared invalid.

There were rumours earlier that three of the APC lawmakers had been compromised by the ruling PDP in the state which has Aminu Tambuwal as governor. One of the APC leaders told Daily Trust on the eve of the inauguration that they suspected the members representing Wamakko and Wurno had been lured by the ruling PDP ahead of the election. Journalists were barred from covering the inauguration and the election by the management of the House. Also affected by this decision were the leaders of the two parties who stormed the legislative house with their supporters, a situation that almost degenerated into chaos but for the quick intervention of the police who fired several tear gas canisters to disperse them.

Meanwhile, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in his congratulatory message to the House described the emergence of the two officers as a triumph for compromise and unity of purpose which he described as the mark of genuine democracy. In the message signed by his Director General, Media and Public Affairs, Abubakar Shekara, the governor said he was particularly pleased by the peaceful proceedings during the inaugural session. This, he added, was an indication of the character of the House for the coming four years. Similarly, APC leaders in Sokoto said they were happy their party was in control of the legislative arm of government, saying it was an indication that the party was the choice of the people of the state.

Chelsea star Willian has been chosen to replace Neymar after the forward was forced out of Brazil’s Copa America plans.

Neymar’s Copa hopes were ruined on Wednesday when he suffered an ankle injury early in his team’s friendly victory over Qatar.

The Paris-Saint Germain man tangled with Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo and ruptured a ligament in the joint, causing him to be substituted just 21 minutes into the game, which eventually finished 2-0 in Brazil’s favour.

His absence from the Copa was confirmed the following day, with the ligament tear expected to keep him on the sidelines for up to six weeks.

He will now return to France, where he will take in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup before continuing treatment on his injury at PSG.

And, while Lucas Moura of Tottenham and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior had been mentioned as replacements, Blues winger Willian has ultimately received the nod.

“The attacker Willian, of Chelsea, has been called up by the Brazil national team and will play the 2019 Brazil Copa America,” the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed in a statement released on Friday.

“He has been called to replace Neymar, who was dropped from the squad following the friendly against Qatar.”

Fabinho has revealed the role ‘agent’ Roberto Firmino played in his move to Liverpool, with a fellow Brazilian helping to talk Jurgen Klopp into a €45 million (£39m/$52m) deal.

Back in the summer of 2018, a versatile performer was edging towards the exits at Monaco.

Clubs from across Europe were eager to secure his services, but it was those at Anfield who moved quickly to get a transfer over the line and leave their rivals empty-handed.

Fabinho admits a switch had been mooted for some time before getting over the line, with Firmino convincing Liverpool that they should be snapping up another South American.

“I remember that after one of my games for Monaco, against Marseille, where I’d played well and scored, Firmino sent me a message and we started to talk,” Fabinho told Esporte Interativo.

“He said: ‘the coach asked about you, what I thought about you, I talked you up a little bit’.

“We exchanged some messages for a while and I asked him some things about Liverpool and that was it for a while.

“Then Liverpool reached my agents, made them aware of the interest and set up a meeting with Klopp. We talked about his ideas for the team, work routine, tactics, physical training.

“My interest was rising, because I had always said that if I were to leave Monaco, it would only be to a team that really wanted me.

“I was very happy with Liverpool wanting to sign me and then made up my mind that it was the right thing to do. It was quick, right after the [Champions League] final against Real Madrid, the signing was made official.”
