Barely seven days to the commencement of the enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition Law in Benue State, Governor Samuel Ortom has said his people will stone him if he failed to implement the new law.
Governor Ortom, who spoke at a meeting with the leadership of Maiyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, traditional rulers, local government council chairmen and other stakeholders in Benue State, insisted that the November implementation date was sacrosanct.
Ortom said: “The entirety of our people demanded for the law, and from the response of the leadership of the various ethnic groups in the state, if I fail to implement the law, they have threatened to implement it themselves and that means chaos and instability will set in.
“What that also means is that if this government fails to do the bidding of the majority of our people, we risk being stoned by the people who insisted that the law should come into being.” Earlier, the National President of Maiyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Alhaji Muhammadu Kirowa, declared the support of his people for the law and the government’s move to check the recurrent herdsmen/farmers crisis in the state.
Kirowa said: “Initially, we thought that the law was intended to chase herdsmen out of Benue, but we have realised that it is intended to create peaceful co-existence among our people. “We appeal to the state government to allow our group more time to get acquainted with the law and to liaise with governors of the northern states to ensure that the over 400 grazing reserves in the country are functional.”

Activities  have again picked up in the eight Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State shut for three months, following the suspension of the strike embarked on by the state chapters of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, and the Medical and Health Workers’ Union, MHWUN.
During the strike, the councils under lock and key were almost taken over by weeds, but NDV observed that the situation was different last week, as the councils were opened for business and brimming with activities. The overgrown weeds had been mowed with commercial activities around the councils booming. Also workers of the councils were sighted at their duty posts going about their normal business.
They were happy to be back  at work and commended the steadfastness of the leadership of their unions and the state government in resolving the logjam. Workers commend state govt Comrade Akpos Ekiegha, state NULGE President and James Adama, chairman MHWUN, said the decision to suspend the sit-at-home action was taken after reviewing the efforts of the state Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd.) and the Commissioner for Local Government Administration, Mrs. Agatha Goma, in facilitating regular payments of salaries and some of the workers arrears during the strike.
Specifically, the unions thanked Governor Seriake Dickson for personally intervening to resolve the plight of primary school teachers by approving monthly funding of their salary deficits. “This will obviously bring about a sigh of relief to the eight councils and ultimately guarantee regular payments  of salaries not only for the council staff but also primary school teachers to restore industrial peace,” the unions said.
